A new exciting revelation was made by AMD’s President yesterday during the company’s 1st Quarter 2018 earnings conference call, indicating that 7nm GPUs are way closer to be unveiled than we might have thought.

AMD’s CEO Dr. Su announced, AMD has been working on 7nm GPUs behind the doors and the work is in progress in the Radeon Technologies Group Laps right now.

7nm Vega is here

Prior to this year, at CES AMD made a public statement; that they are working on a 7nm Vega based graphics processor which will be optimized for Artificial Intelligence and machine learning workloads.

At the beginning of this month, thanks to Wccftech for sighting the code of a Linux patch that made a reference to Vega 20 by name, confirming that Vega 20 is actually a thing. The patch introduced more than 50 new vega hardware features which indicated that AMD could be approaching the final stages of post-silicon testing and validation of Vega 20. However, Su’s announcement yesterday made it clear that everything was legitimate. The Vega 20 from AMD will be the first chip designed particularly for AI and machine learning workloads from AMD. It will compete directly with Nvidia’s Volta based accelerators which include the Quadro GV100 and Titan V.
