Alfonso Ribeiro is a famous actor who played as Carlton Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Alfonso Ribeiro’s dance played a considerable role in his fame. He first performed the Carlton Dance move on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He was the co-star of Will Smith in the American sitcom.
Alfonso Ribeiro has gone ahead and filed a lawsuit against Fortnite for stealing his famous dance move “The Carlton Dance”. According to TMZ, Ribeiro says Fortnite released new dance called the ‘Fresh emote’ which came out on January 2nd, 2018. Additionally, Ribeiro is also in the process of making The Carlton Dance copyrighted.
Alfonso Ribeiro’s Attorney states:
It is widely recognized that Mr. Ribeiro’s likeness and intellectual property have been misappropriated by Epic Games in the most popular video game currently in the world, Fortnite.
Epic has earned record profits off of downloadable content in the game, including emotes like “Fresh.” Yet Epic has failed to compensate or even ask permission from Mr. Ribeiro for the use of his likeness and iconic intellectual property.
However, this is not the first time a celebrity has sued Fortnite for copying a dance move and putting it in the game under a different name. Furthermore, Rapper 2 Milly is also going ahead to sue Fortnite for copying his dance move “Milly Rock”. 2 Milly’s dance move is in the game under the name “Swipe It”.
2 Milly’s Attorney stated the following:
proud to stand up for African-American creatives whose expression and likenesses have misappropriated. Epic is enjoying record profits off of downloadable content in Fortnite, yet has failed to pay or even ask permission to use artists’ intellectual property and likenesses over many of its popular emote dances.
For now, there hasn’t been any statement from the developers of Fortnite.
