At first glance, the box of Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply looks interesting and serious at the same. Taking a closer look at the front side of the box the 92% Efficiency tag caught my attention.
We can also see the big label of ‘High Current Gamer‘ which is the tagline of this series of PSU from Antec. We can also see that it is an 80 PLUS Gold Certified power supply.
The tags embedded below on the bottom left side of the box say 100% Genuine capacitors, 92% Max Efficiency, Continous Power, 100% Modular, Hybrid Mode and a surprising 10 Year Warranty badge. It’s surprising because a decade is a long time and if a brand is confident enough to give their product that much of a warranty period then it’s obvious they’ve incorporated that particular product with the utmost premium internals.
Coming at the back side of the box we can see a lot of qualities of the PSU which includes some worthy attributes such as the PhaseWave Design and Circuit Shield.
Rest of the sides of the box aren’t that much interesting and the information feels repetitive which is the common case.
After taking off the outer box we get the actual box in which the PSU is resting to be fired up. It would be just cool if Antec added a logo on this box.
At first glance, we are enlightened with the cable management goodies which include some velcro straps, zip ties and the usual documentation with the manuals.
After putting aside the extra stuff we get to see the actual Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply itself covered in a decent carrying bag with the modular cables as well in a separate carrying bag also, topped off with the quality power cable as well.
After unwrapping the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply we finally get to see the PSU in all its glory. Taking a quick look at the PSU, we can see that the power button side of the PSU isn’t somewhat usual, because it has a button which indicates ‘Hybrid Mode’ (Details are mentioned below).
Rest is usual, on top of the PSU we can see a spec sheet which exhibits the details of the amperes corresponding to their wattage and the right side of the PSU sports the name and logo of the series ‘HCG’ which states High Current Gamer 750.
On the bottom of the PSU, we can also see the fan fitted behind the grill along with the Antec logo.
Taking a look at the modular ports of the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold, we can see that the ports are properly labeled so even novice PC builders won’t have any trouble at all while installing their required peripheral connectors.
After unwrapping the cables, we can see that Antec gave some attention to the cables as well. The main connectors are braided while the other peripheral connectors are also black wired but not braided, the black cables are always greater than the ketchup mustard colored cables of some low tier power supplies.
The cables have an adequate amount of quantities for all of your needs for storage and peripheral connections.
Hybrid Mode: Basically, Antec has engineered the hybrid mode button to enable the user to determine whether the fan should run continuously or in zero RPM mode. The fan is not turned on automatically until it’s needed.
To take things to a more comprehensive level, we’ll be opening up the casing of Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply to dig further in the internals of the power supply and determine how well the internals are built on the basis of a quick overview.
The cooling fan included in the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply is 120MM FDB fan as mentioned on the main site of Antec, it is a fluid-dynamic bearing fan which provides high airflow with the durability and longevity. Also during the whole time of our testing, we found the fan to be extremely quiet and efficient during all of the load and idle times. Overall it seems to be on par with the premium standard of the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply.
Taking a closer look at the internals we can clearly see that Antec made sure to keep things clean on the inside of the power supply as well.
All of the coils, heat sinks, capacitors, and transistors are soldered with premium grade engineering topped off with the adequate amount of heatsinks to keep things cool and steady.
We can appreciate the clean soldering done on the connectors of the cables as well.
Overall, the internals exhibit a premium feel which checks in with the fact that this is a premium power supply. We’re pretty much satisfied to see that Antec didn’t cheap out on the internals.
Comprehensive in-depth review of a power supply is not an easy task, it requires the reviewer to be all set with the exclusive equipment in his arsenal, which is extremely costly, so, in our review, we will only be looking at the voltage stability of the PSU which can easily be done by a multimeter. The multi-meter we used in our test was UNI-T UT203. We ran the Aida64 Extreme Stability test on all components to apply the experimental load to see how far can Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply hold under these extensive loads. Readings were then extracted after a few minutes of stress testing. These readings are for 3.3v, 5v, and 12v lines. Minimum and maximum readings were noted.
Our CPU Ryzen 1700 was overclocked to a safe 3.8GHz to put supreme load. We examined our system using Aida64 Extreme stress test with all options checked. CPU only was utilizing the total of 125W. Every computer component was on 100% load. So the values are assumed to change in different settings.
We conducted various stress tests beneath complex conditions and load to the power supply with the precise scaling of voltages. The tool used for this test is a UNI-T UT203 Digital Clamp Multimeter Ampere Meter. Before we dive into the details of the power supply, we should mention some of the worthy attributes of the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply which includes a heavy +12V rail with around 62A power to keep up with the continuous demand of your electrically demanding hardware. Its efficiency is the main outstanding perk it brings with itself, comprising 80 Plus Gold rating efficiency.
Ultimately, it provides a continuous power of 750w whenever you throw the load at it. So don’t worry if you are concerned about the efficiency of this power supply.
So without wasting any time, let’s dive straight into the performance benchmarks!
|CPU:||Ryzen 1700 – 3.8Ghz OC|
|Motherboard:||ASUS Crosshair VI|
|GPU||Gigabyte GTX 1080 Windforce OC|
|RAM:||G.Skill Trident Z 3200MHz 16GB CL16|
|SSD:||Samsung 960 Evo 500GB|
|HDD:||Hitachi Deskstar 2TB|
|Chassis:||Thermaltake View 22 Tempered Glass|
|Cooling Solution:||Corsair H115i 280mm AIO|
|PSU||Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply|
Reading the values from our multimeter, we are off by 0.003v at greatest on the 3.3volt rail. That’s about 0.06% off. Coming at the side of the 5v rail, we have a perimeter of 0.06 volts. That’s 1.6 difference in percentage. And our most steady line was the 12V one. It principally lingered at 12.05v, nevertheless, there was an increase of 0.01 volts here. So the numbers here are very encouraging. Power Supplies have a sensitivity rating and anything under 5% on the three rails mentioned above are admissible. And it’s immeasurable to see that we haven’t even bisected half the limit here. So performance-wise, this makes sure Antec HCG 750W is a good PSU.
Overall, I’ll repeat that the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply looks like a solid performer. Staying away from the tolerance limits while keeping the efficiency of the 80% PLUS Gold as well.
The Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply is available for $117 on Amazon from MicroComputers as of now. In Pakistan, it is available at 14,599PKR on PakDukaan. Huge shoutout to Antec Taiwan and PakDukaan for sending us the review sample.
To wrap things up, I’d like to mention that the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply serves what it’s supposed to serve. The power supply exhibits a premium overall feel due to its build quality and throughout the whole testing of the power supply, we had no issues whatsoever. I am using this power supply in my personal computer for a month and I can proudly say that it hasn’t shown any kind of flaws in 25-30 days. I’ve rendered numerous videos and have played a lot of games throughout this whole month without any hassle. The PSU delivers what it’s supposed to deliver and it’s a good add-on in your enthusiastic gaming PC or workstation system.
However, the PSU isn’t inclined much towards the people who are on a budget and it’s sort of a bummer these days that people on a budget still can’t afford a gold rated power supply. Nevertheless, the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply is designed for enthusiasts and enthusiasts don’t have budget problems usually, so still, it isn’t a big deal.
One last concern or I should say a personal request to all of the premium PSU brands is that I wish if these expensive PSU’s include separately braided cables inside the box. In 2018, it almost feels absurd if you’re buying a premium power supply and not getting separately sleeved cables with it. I wish this addition would come in the future in all of the premium power supplies.
We are going to award the Antec HCG 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply with our “Recommended Buy” Award because this PSU is the best choice amongst its current competitors in the market, as it accomplishes the 80+ Gold rating efficiency in an adequate budget. Personally, we here at PakGamersRepublic would recommend this PSU to every enthusiast who is looking for a solid PSU for their high-end computer.
