Epic Games Store recently shocked everyone, when it announced that the service will be giving away GTA V for free. The giveaway was huge because giving away one of the most successful and popular titles was not usual.
Moreover, the giveaway completely broke Epic Games Store. The Store crashed constantly, and along with that, the Rockstar Game Services saw huge numbers of Online players. Likewise, the Rockstar Service also crashed numerous times, and to say it in short. It was total chaos.
Well, that giveaway brought Epic Games tons of traffic. Not only that, the other games that followed like Civilization 6, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, and Ark: Survival evolved were also successful. The giveaway scheme has been highly successful for Epic Games Store.
The store announced that it had an average peak concurrent user count of 13 million. In contrast, the monthly users were more than 61 million. Most of these numbers come from the giveaway, and not the returning users. I’d love to see the current number of Epic Games Store, which only consists of players active and playing the games. Maybe, next month we could compare its stats with the previous month.
“Since launching the Epic Games Store, we’ve always wanted to create a huge event around our very successful Free Games weekly program to give something awesome to players worldwide, and we decided to go big,” said Epic Games Store GM Steve Allison. “We invested in acquiring the rights to give four of the biggest games in the world away free.
“In 2020, we’ve been growing at a historic rate. Epic Games Store partners have a huge audience of players to sell their games to and receive 88 percent of the revenue, instead of only 70 percent as on other platforms.”
In contrast to Steam, this is an average number. Due to Coronavirus, we had seen an incredible rise in playerbase on these gaming platforms. Steam had a whopping 19 Million+ Players online. They later broke its own record of 24 Million. Not only that, it had 95 million monthly active users in 2019. We must realize that this is Epic Games Store at its best still not getting close to Steam. Epic is growing really rapidly, and perhaps one day they could compete with the big gun in the Game Distribution Platform.
