Physical Event cancelled

A lot of Gaming Events and announcements are being cancelled due to the COVID-19. We thought maybe Gamescom 2020 would be delayed, however, it is being cancelled. In a statement from the German Game Industry Association, Gamescom 2020 physical event is cancelled.

It was very likely that Physical event was being cancelled, however, the digital format is progressing rapidly.

It’s official: unfortunately, Gamescom will under no circumstances take place on site in Cologne this year,” they said.

“We are, however, already working at full speed on a digital Gamescom. It is, after all, the world’s biggest event for games, and that’s what it should be again this year.

“We will reveal more about this in the next few weeks. Until then, stay healthy and don’t forget to “StayHomePlayTogether!”

German Government decision affected Gamescom 2020

German Game Association was confident that Gamescom 2020 would run freely in Germany from August 25-29. However, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that all public gatherings would remain banned until August 31. This was definitely the end for Gamescom 2020 hopes.

Lastly, the Digital event possibility was discussed last month. Koelnmesse managing director Oliver Frese shared his thoughts, saying Gamescom digital formats along Koelnmesse already attract a lot of viewers. This year It’ll be “significantly expanded and new modules added”.

“Gamescom and Koelnmesse already rank among the digital pioneers in the international trade fair landscape,” he added. “We therefore also see the current corona crisis as a chance to implement digital event formats even more. Gamescom 2020 offers the perfect platform for this.”

We heard about BlizzCon 2020 being cancelled. Similarly, E3 the biggest of all was cancelled for the first time in 25 years. Both events were fully cancelled, meaning no digital events either. I’m very happy that Gamescom will happen digitally, at least we could hear some nice announcements. Insted of waiting another year.
