A presentation was given in Taipei in which Gigabyte revealed that their X399 AORUS Extreme motherboard is officially the first to list support for AMD Ryzen Threadripper 32 core, 64 thread processors. These new processors by AMD will feature the highest core count ever seen and will be releasing in Q3 2018.

As this motherboard is a part of the upcoming X399 refresh series, this new Gigabyte X399 AORUS Extreme motherboard will feature full support for current and upcoming AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors. The new processor lineup will be featuring up to 32 cores and 64 threads. This also means that new board designs will be needed as the processors will be rated at TDPs of up to 250 Watts.



The Gigabyte X399 AORUS Extreme is a very high-end motherboard and it makes use of many new additions to the X399 platform. Proper aluminum fin-based heatsinks were first introduced by Gigabyte on their X470 AORUS Gaming 7 motherboards. They are going to deliver a much better solution on their AORUS Extreme motherboard. The board makes use of a 10+3 phase PWM which will get the power through dual 8-pin EPS connectors. This huge set of heatsinks is covering the entire PWM area and are interconnected via a solid heat pipe.



Eight DDR4 DIMM slots (Four on each side) are surrounding the AMD TR4 socket. This motherboard has 6 SATA III ports. The motherboard has a single PCI-e 3.0 x1 slot, four PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots, and three M.2 slots. Designed to offer 64 PCI-e lanes the AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors require more power in order to power so many expansion devices. By adding a single 6-pin power connector just for that, Gigabyte took care of that too.

A large shroud that embeds Gigabyte’s RGB LEDs covers the I/O of the motherboard. PCH has a distinct heatsink cover that embeds the AORUS logo and also displays RGB lighting. This motherboard has three LAN ports (10G), two USB 3.1 ports (type A and type C), 8 USB 3.0 ports, power and reset switches, a 7.1 channel HD audio jack powered by ESS Sabre HiFi solution, and two wireless antennas.
