Just In: Microsoft has just told all of its third-party publishers, that game upgrades to Xbox Series X Shall be free. Of course, Microsoft cannot simply impose whatever they want. Therefore, now they will wait for publishers to answer regarding the situation.
This is Microsoft’s smart delivery support program. As Reported by VGC, Microsoft has also allowed another option, where the publishers can provide two copies of the game. One would be for old generation Xbox, and one would be for new. Now, NBA 2K21 is being offered for $100, and it comes with two editions.
Some publishers have already agreed to Xbox’s Smart Delivery System. These include a variety of games, that will offer a free upgrade on Xbox Series X like, FIFA 21, Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
Microsoft spokesperson said that “developers and publishers ultimately decide how they deliver their games, and we work with them to provide the best possible experience based on their needs.”
These programs are now put up in front of developers, and Microsoft wants to make sure that all arrangements are done before the launch. This is because “games that do not support Smart Delivery upon release on Xbox One and Series X will not be able to then add support for the scheme at a later date.”
“It will be up to individual developers to determine whether they implement Smart Delivery, and they can choose to use it for titles that will release on Xbox One first and come to Xbox Series X later.
Overall, this is a very good initiative by Microsoft. That is to say, they really care about customers, and free game upgrades would be huge. Not only that, but the option to buy one game on two platforms will also be the next level. So far, Microsoft owned Game Studio Titles are already supporting Smart Delivery. But, others are still in the process of taking a decision.
Microsoft said that “player is at the center of everything we do, which is why we’re committed to supporting exclusive Xbox Game Studios titles, including ’Halo Infinite,’ with Smart Delivery, providing the best available version for whichever console you choose to play on.”
